Introduction to Universities in Singapore
Education in Universities
There are both government and private universities in Singapore. Public schools are government schools. They are registered and managed by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. There are also various types of private schools in Singapore. Private schools are generally run by private companies or non-profit organisations.
These institutes accept both local and foreign students, with foreign students making up 25% of the student population. It is an entirely English learning environment where English is used as the main medium of speech for all university subjects.
There are 3 government public universities in Singapore:
-
National University of Singapore (NUS)
-
Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
-
Singapore Management University (SMU)
Singapore's university education aspires to prepare students not only for today's world but also for a world where there will be jobs that have yet to be invented and challenges not yet foreseen.
The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have initiated a number of innovative programmes, including the broadening of undergraduate education, the introduction of a core curriculum, collaborations with top foreign universities, and the establishment of inter-disciplinary centres. The Singapore Management University (SMU) offers a broad-based business curriculum modelled after that of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Private institutions receive public funds, e.g. NAFA (The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) and LASALLE-SIA School of the Arts. There are other private Universities, such as SIM University (UniSIM), which is the fourth university in Singapore approved by the Ministry of Education to award its own degrees. Most private universities adopt a flexible admission but stringent graduation philosophy. It has created multiple learning paths for students who hold a diversity of education qualifications and work experience. These institutes are equally dedicated in providing working professionals the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications for lifelong employability as well as adult learners the chance to acquire a university degree.
Some of the degree programmes offered in universities are courses in Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Computing, Dentistry, Designing, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Music and Science.
Universities in Singapore allow students to go for attachments with various industries and/or exchange programmes. Such opportunities will widen the scope of students and let them gain experiences from different perspectives which are extremely relevant to their future.
Financial Support
Universities provide many financial aid schemes for students. For example, NUS and NTU give tuition fees subsidy of 50% to foreign students every year. Financial aid schemes include bursaries and study loans. Students with excellent results can also apply for various forms of scholarships and awards. Other than that, to lessen the financial burden for foreign students, there are two vacation periods every year; hence students are able to work part-time. After graduation, students have to work in Singapore under a bond of three years, after which they will be granted Permanent Resident (PR) status in Singapore.
Admitting to Universities
To facilitate admission to Universities in Singapore, graduates of foreign high school and above can enroll in SCI ’s Singapore government universities preparatory course and then take the G.C.E. ‘A’ Level Examination. After passing this examination, they will be able to apply for admission into Singapore government universities.
Spring College International is one of the best schools in conducting GCE ‘A’ preparatory course.
