About the IELTS Preparation Course

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most widely-recognised English proficiency test, administered by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS scores are accepted for university admission, professional registration, work, and migration applications across the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, and beyond.

Unlike general English classes, IELTS preparation requires targeted training on exam format, scoring criteria, and exam-specific techniques — not just language improvement. Our course is built specifically around the IELTS exam, combining language skill development with structured exam preparation and regular mock exam practice. IELTS is offered in two versions: Academic (for university admission) and General Training (for work and migration). Our course prepares students for both.

Our Three Duration Options

Our IELTS Preparation Course is designed around three duration options. The right one depends on your current English level, your target band score, and how quickly you need to sit the exam:

3-Month Intensive

For students with strong existing English (CEFR B2 or higher) who need IELTS quickly for an approaching deadline. Suitable for targeting Band 6.0 to 7.5 with a strong starting level.

6-Month Standard

For students with moderate English proficiency who want balanced English skill-building and exam preparation. Suitable for most students targeting Band 6.0 to 7.0.

12-Month Foundation

For students whose current English level needs substantial rebuilding (CEFR A2 or below) before targeted IELTS preparation begins. Suitable for students starting from a lower base who need to reach Band 5.5 to 7.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to prepare for IELTS?

It depends on your current English level and target band score. Students with strong existing English (CEFR B2+) often achieve their target in 3 months of intensive preparation. Students with moderate English typically need 6 months. Students starting from a lower base who need to build general English first may need 12 months. Our free placement test at enrolment will help recommend the right duration for you.

IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration (medicine, nursing, engineering, etc.). IELTS General Training is for work, migration, and secondary education. The Listening and Speaking components are identical; the Reading and Writing components differ. Our course covers both versions — you choose which one to sit based on your goal.

It depends on your purpose. Singapore public universities typically require Band 6.0–6.5 and private universities typically require Band 5.5–6.0 for undergraduate admission, and Band 6.5–7.0 for postgraduate. UK universities range from 6.0 to 7.5. Migration applications (Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand) typically require Band 6.0–7.0 depending on the visa category. Professional bodies (nursing, medicine) often require Band 7.0+. Check your target institution or visa category for exact requirements.

The official IELTS exam is administered in Singapore by IDP IELTS and the British Council. After completing your preparation, we help you to register for the test directly through one of these providers. Our team will handle the registration process and recommend the optimal test date based on your readiness from mock exams.

IELTS scores are given as band scores from 0 to 9, with 9 being expert level. You receive a separate band score for each of the four components (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), plus an overall band score (the average of the four). Half bands (e.g. 6.5, 7.5) are also awarded. Most universities and visa categories require a minimum overall band plus minimum scores in each component.

IELTS test results are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, most universities and migration authorities require a fresh IELTS score. Plan your test timing accordingly — taking IELTS too early may mean you need to retake it before your target university intake or visa application.

Yes. There’s no limit on the number of IELTS retakes — you can register for another test as soon as you feel ready. Many students take IELTS twice to achieve their target band score. Our team can help you identify which components need more work between attempts.

If your current English level is below CEFR B1, you may benefit from starting with our Certificate in English course — a more foundational programme covering general English fluency. Once your English reaches an intermediate level, you can progress to IELTS preparation for exam-specific training. Our placement test will tell you which option suits you best.

Yes. As an EduTrust-certified PEI, Spring College International is authorised to sponsor Student Pass applications for international students enrolled in our full-time courses. Our admissions team handles the application process with ICA, which typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.

No. The official IELTS test fee is paid separately to IDP IELTS or the British Council when you register for the exam. Course fees cover all preparation classes, study materials, mock exams at SCI. Our team can advise on test fees and registration timing.
