Our Certificate in Chinese Course is available in three durations. The right one depends on your starting level and how much time you want to invest in building your Mandarin skills:
3-Month
For learners with some prior Chinese exposure — heritage learners, students who studied Chinese previously, or those familiar with basic Pinyin — who want a focused boost to spoken confidence and everyday vocabulary.
6-Month
For beginners and lower-intermediate learners who want balanced progress across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Time to build pronunciation and tone foundations alongside practical practice.
12-Month

Programme description:
The Certificate in Chinese Course is designed to build practical Mandarin skills for real-world use — daily conversations, workplace communication, business situations, and travel. Lessons are interactive and discussion-based rather than lecture-style, meaning you actively practise Mandarin in every class. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or already at an intermediate level, our placement test at enrolment ensures you’re grouped with students at a similar level.
Course Modules (4 components):
- Speaking — Build confidence to speak Mandarin in everyday and work situations. Master the four tones, practise common dialogues, and develop a clear, intelligible accent through guided pronunciation work.
- Listening — Develop the ability to understand spoken Mandarin in conversations, announcements, news, and basic media. Practice with different speaking speeds and regional accents.
- Reading — Learn to recognise and read Chinese characters in context, starting with high-frequency characters and Pinyin, progressing to common signs, menus, messages, and short articles.
- Writing — Develop character writing skills through stroke order practice, vocabulary building, and short writing tasks. Learn the logic behind Chinese characters to remember them more easily.

Language Proficiency
No minimum Chinese level required. We assess each student’s starting level through our free Chinese placement test.
Duration:

- Mode: Full-time
- Lesson time: Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm OR 1pm to 4pm
- Intake: Monthly
No classes during public holidays and school holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to become conversational in Mandarin?
It depends on your starting level and practice consistency. Most absolute beginners reach basic conversational ability in 6 months of structured learning. Reaching comfortable intermediate fluency typically takes 12 months or longer. Learners with prior Chinese exposure (heritage learners or those who studied Chinese before) often progress faster. Consistent practice outside class significantly accelerates results.
Will I learn Simplified or Traditional Chinese characters?
Our course primarily teaches Simplified Chinese characters — the writing system used in mainland China and Singapore. If you’re specifically interested in Traditional characters (used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas Chinese communities), speak with our team and we can arrange supplementary materials.
Do I need to learn Pinyin?
Yes — Pinyin is the romanisation system used to learn Mandarin pronunciation, and it’s an essential starting point for all learners. Our course teaches Pinyin in the first weeks, then gradually introduces Chinese characters alongside Pinyin. Pinyin is also how you type Chinese on phones and computers, so it’s a practical lifelong skill.
Will I receive a recognised qualification?
You’ll receive the Spring College International Certificate in Chinese upon successful completion. This is not an externally recognised qualification like HSK. If you need a globally recognised Chinese proficiency certificate (for university applications or visa purposes), prepare for HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) separately — the official test administered by the Chinese government. The skills you build in our course directly support HSK preparation.
How are tones taught?
Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral tone, and getting tones right is essential for being understood. Our teachers focus heavily on tone training from day one — using pronunciation drills, tone-pair exercises, and listening discrimination practice. With consistent practice, most students can hear and produce tones accurately within 2 to 3 months.
Can international students join on a Student Pass?
Yes. As an EduTrust-certified PEI, Spring College International is authorised to sponsor Student Pass applications for international students enrolled in our full-time courses. Our admissions team handles the application process with ICA, which typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.
What teaching method do you use?
Our approach combines communicative language teaching (practical conversation practice from day one) with structured grammar and character instruction. Classes are interactive — you actively speak, listen, read, and write in every lesson, not just listen to the teacher.
How can I practise Mandarin outside class?
Singapore is an ideal place to practise Mandarin — it’s an official language widely spoken in daily life. Our teachers will guide you on resources including Chinese podcasts, drama series, news apps, language exchange opportunities, and recommended reading. Consistent practice outside class is the single biggest factor in fast progress.
