Introduction to Singapore government polytechnics
After ‘O’ Level, many students may opt to go to Polytechnics. Polytechnics were set up with the mission to train middle-level professionals to support the technological and economic development of Singapore. Reflecting the wide range of abilities, aptitudes and interests of their students, the polytechnics seek to train students with relevant and specific skills for the workplace to give Singapore a competitive edge as we move into a knowledge-based economy. Today, polytechnic graduates are valued as practice-oriented and knowledgeable middle-level professionals, much sought after by industry.
There are currently five polytechnics in Singapore that accept both local and foreign students, namely – Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Republic Polytechnic (RP).
Foreign students make up 20% of the total student body population. The teaching methods and facilities are of world-class standard, with teachers coming from all over the world. It is an entirely English-speaking environment where the subjects are all taught in English.
Diplomas obtained from Singapore polytechnics are recognized worldwide. The government sponsors 80% of the school fees while students only have to pay around S$2300. In return, students will have to work in Singapore under a three-year bond. This helps to reduce the financial burden of foreign students. Other than that, the government permits polytechnic students to work legally so that a student can support his/her basic needs.
There are many various forms of scholarships offered by the polytechnics and students with excellent academic results will be able to apply for them. Another good perk for a student who graduates from a polytechnic is that he/she will immediately be granted Permanent Resident (PR) status.
Some of the courses offered in Polytechnics are Architecture, Accountancy, Banking & Financial Services, Business Management, Logistics, Marketing, Chemical and Life Sciences, Aerospace, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, IT, Multimedia, Interior Design etc.
The courses emphasize the development of problem-solving and thinking skills as well as communication and teamwork abilities. You get to explore creative solutions through continuous project assignments and final-year projects. In the learning process, you will broaden your mindset, develop leadership qualities and polish your analytical skills to prepare you to conquer the working world when you graduate. Polytechnics also tend to work very closely with employers to ensure that their course curriculums meet industry needs and demands. Thus, a diploma could be a good passport to a world of opportunities with promising careers.
